Summary
Leon Lai’s long-unseen television comeback has finally reached viewers, with the mainland drama “The Silent Speaker” premiering in October 2026 after years of delays. The series, reportedly made with a budget of RMB300 million, was completed in 2018 but remained unreleased amid production setbacks and a lengthy approval process. After its debut, online reaction quickly split between viewers who praised the veteran pairing of Lai and Zhang Fengyi and those disappointed by the heavy use of post-production dubbing. The strongest criticism focused on the fact that even Lai, whose voice many fans associate closely with his screen presence, was not heard in his original dialogue track
Key Points
- Lai, who had not filmed for years, quietly returned to television in 2017 to lead “The Silent Speaker,” a mainland drama later billed at RMB300 million
- The drama wrapped in 2018 but remained shelved for eight years before finally premiering in October 2026 after multiple setbacks
- Lai plays elite security specialist Wei Tian, who loses his wife and daughter in a terror attack and opens the Silent Speaker Office under an assumed identity
- Production filmed on location in Morocco and also built a full-scale African street set in Yinchuan for chase, rescue and explosion scenes
- Viewers praised Lai and Zhang Fengyi’s tense, mature rivalry, but many criticized the fluent Mandarin dubbing given to foreign kidnappers, African locals and Lai himself
Why It Matters
For Hong Kong audiences, the release revives interest in one of Leon Lai’s rare screen projects after many years away from television, linking current streaming discussion with memories of his 1990s TVB fame. The divided response also shows how nostalgia alone may not satisfy viewers when voice performance, post-production choices and delayed release affect how a star’s screen identity is received
